PROVIDENCE In September 1998, citing Project HEALTH's capacity to leverage the resources of multiple constituencies and the powerful results achieved, Rhode Island's Hasbro Children's Hospital joined with a team of Brown University undergraduates in requesting Project HEALTH's first out-of-state expansion. Six months later, eight children splashed into the South Side Boys and Girls Club pool as participants in Rhode Island's first Asthma Swimming Program. Since then, undergraduate volunteers at Brown and their mentors have founded a Fitness and Nutrition Program as well as a Family Help Desk. Community Served According to the 1990 census, 68% of Rhode Island's poor children lived in Providence and the surrounding cities of Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Newport, and Central Falls. Project HEALTH programs address the need of the families and children from South Providence, where approximately twenty-eight percent of children have elevated lead levels, and more than twenty percent of child hospitalizations are for asthma-related reasons.
