About Us
"The social issues, like having money for heat, have a big impact on children's health. But, physicians can only do so much. My nurses can't do it all. The social worker we have on this floor can't do it all. We all feel like sometimes we're running on a treadmill and just barely staying above water. As part of the team, the Family Help Desk makes a difference. It's a powerful thing."
- Dr. Bobbi Philipp, Mentor, Boston Medical Center

HOSPITAL-BASED PROGRAMS Family Help Desk volunteers in D.C. advocate for families visiting Children's National Medical Center.

Granted just fifteen minutes per patient, physicians do not have enough time both to provide necessary medical care and to address critical determinants of families' health such as adequate food and housing. As a result, families blocked by bureaucratic terminology, language barriers and administrative errors require additional support to fulfill the entirety of their health and social needs.

In response, Project HEALTH develops resource and advocacy centers that complement the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. Situated in pediatric waiting rooms, neonatal units, adolescent medicine departments and community health centers, Project HEALTH volunteers use clinic visits as an opportunity to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival.
